Journal of Arachnology unveiled a newly discovered spider species found in Minhou, Fuzhou city, East China's Fujian Province - Haoyang Guizygiella. Its name honors its discoverer, 15-year-old Ni Haoyang, a freshman at Fuzhou No.11 High School. Ni is a well-known science blogger focused on insects.
In 2022, his popular science videos caught the attention of CCTV News Live Broadcast, where he expressed his dream of discovering a new species named after himself.
In 2023, Ni teamed up with Zi Chong, a researcher in spider taxonomy, to search for dung beetles in Minhou. Using his keen observation skills, Ni noticed a spider with unique morphological features and brought it back for study. After preliminary examination, Zi Chong determined that it might be an undocumented new species. Following in-depth research, repeated verification, rigorous paper writing, and a long wait, it was finally confirmed to be a new member of the Guizygiella genus. To honour Ni's discovery, the species was named Haoyang Guizygiella. "It feels like a dream," Ni admitted, saying the unexpected discovery was even more exciting than his original dung beetle research.
